Best Shoes for Diabetic Neuropathy – Check The Reviews

In order to properly deal with diabetic neuropathy, one must take a holistic approach. Prevention then becomes a must in.

While you cannot and should not avoid walking and doing physical activities, you can grab appropriate shoes for that purpose. Here follows a list of the best shoes for diabetic neuropathy. By the way the list features many Skechers shoes recommended for neuropathy.

During my internship at a certified endocrinology Clinic, I had witnessed some awful diabetic feet issues that went sometimes up to amputation.

Leading an unhealthy lifestyle is mostly the reason behind those feet issues. If you don't wear the right shoes, you expose your feet to external traumas. Even the slightest trauma leads to severe consequences.

As a diabetic person, you want to avoid that.

Worry less... Walk More

I have good news for you.

There are some shoes out there that if you wear one, you'll no longer have to worry about walking, running or doing daily activities. You'll lead an entirely normal life.

By the way, walking is excellent for you. Why? Because walking regularly:

  • Improves sugar control. Physical activity prevents sugar levels to build up in the bloodstream because muscles absorb glucose with exercise.
  • Enhances cardiovascular system. Diabetic persons have a higher risk for heart disease so walking helps.
  • Controls weight and reduces health risks.

That said, today's market is huge. There are many low quality shoes out there.

How do I know which shoe is going to protect my diabetic feet?

I've got the answer.

Based on many criteria which include:

  • Customer’s ratings and reviews
  • Value for money
  • Shoe material
  • Style
  • Price

(See the details in the reviews)

I made a top list of the most comfortable walking shoes for diabetic persons suffering from peripheral neuropathy. The list contains different styles for different events so you can adjust according to that.

Grab one of these and start enjoying your life again.

Basics I took into consideration:

  •  The padding: I think this is by far the most important criteria to consider before choosing your diabetic shoe. Not only does the padding increase the comfort of the shoe, but it also ensures the avoidance of micro traumas susceptible to provoking a serious infection that can lead to serious neuropathic issues.
  • The insole: Although it is replaceable and can be adapted according to your feet, some diabetic shoes tend to have their own insoles. The importance of the insole lies in the fact that it serves as an extra-comfort layer between your feet and the padding. Thus, it protects your feet, provides comfort, and decrease pain.
  •  The outsole: It should be thick in order to isolate the feet from any potential external trauma whether thermic or physical. It should also be smooth in order to ensure a high level of comfort for the wearer
  •   The function: Although there could be a shoe for each activity (walking, running, jumping, etc.), I do think that any good diabetic shoe must contain the same criteria (which I mentioned earlier).

What Is Diabetic Neuropathy

Diabetic neuropathy is nerve damage that occurs when blood sugar is too high for too long.

Diabetes can harm any nerve throughout your body, but it mostly hurts the nerves of your legs and feet.

Peripheral neuropathy is one of the main types of Diabetic neuropathy. Its main symptoms are:

  • Tingling Numbness (which may become permanent)
  • Burning (especially in the evening)
  • Pain
  • Lack of pain and temperature sensitivity

How diabetic neuropathy can lead to amputation

Diabetes infographic

High sugar blood can cause peripheral artery disease (PAD). PAD cause blood vessels to narrow and blood flow to reduce in your legs and feet. Nerve fibers will have less nutrients to maintain their integrity and function. Thus, your pain sensitivity will significantly decrease.

When you no longer feel pain, a wound can go unrecognized. It gets infected and worsens without you even being aware of it.

Furthermore, the healing process becomes slower when you have PAD.

With time you can have tissue damage or death (gangrene). In order to stop the infection doctors will have to amputate the infected part.

Usually, amputation concerns feet, toes or even legs.

How can you prevent it?

Three main ways:

  • Tight blood sugar control
  • Foot care
  • Special shoes
